Saint Charles Adult Altar Servers assist the Priest Celebrant at the 4:00pm Mass on Saturday and the 8:00am Mass on Sunday. Adult servers are also utilized for special services such as Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, and Corpus Christi. Whether you served in your school years or never served before, all adult men of the parish are asked to consider this most important parish ministry. Training is provided for all adult servers. St. Charles Borromeo’s Ancient Acolyte Ministry was established to provide Altar Servers for Funeral Masses and Memorial Masses at St. Charles Parish. This ministry is distinct from the Adult Servers Ministry which provides Adult Servers for Weekend and Special Liturgies at the Parish. Presently there are ten (10) active Ancient Acolytes. The Ancient Acolyte Ministry is for Adult Men of the Parish who are retired or have weekday morning availability. Anyone interested in joining the Ancient Acolyte Ministry should contact Father Carlin at 440-884-3030 or drop a note to his attention at the Parish Office. Experience, while welcome, is not necessary and will be provided. CYRENIANS - PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY MINISTRY
The St. Charles Cyrenians were organized to aid organizations who provide services to and meet the needs of the area’s homeless and people in need. The primary activity of the Group is the making of Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches every other Wednesday. The Cyrenians solicit donations from businesses as well as St. Charles Borromeo Parishioners for Peanut Butter, Jelly, Bread, Bagels, and other necessary items. A Bulletin Announcement precedes the biweekly meeting seeking volunteers to assist. The Cyrenians are also involved in other efforts to assist those in need including the St. Charles Borromeo Eyeglass Collection. The Saint Charles Borromeo Dismas Ministry is a correspondence ministry with Inmates Housed throughout the Ohio Adult Corrections System. The group meets bimonthly on the second Monday of the month in the Pope St. John XXIII Room of the Parish Activities Center. Members are assigned a list of names, usually fifteen to twenty, for them to correspond with inmates on their Birthdays, Holidays, Veterans Day and the like. Cards and Stamps are provided to team members. Inmates have written back to members that this is most often the only correspondence they receive as friends and family are gone or don’t write. It is a very rewarding and uplifting experience to receive such correspondence and know that you have made a difference in someone’s life. Eucharistic Ministers, or Extraordinary Ministers of Communion as they are properly called, assist the Priests with the Distribution of the Holy Eucharist at Weekend Liturgies, Weekday Liturgies, and with Communion Calls to Parishioners who are shut-in, in nursing facilities, and in hospitals. Ministers must attend a Diocesan Training Workshop and a Parish Training Workshop prior to beginning Ministry. Ministers are scheduled on a two-month cycle via the Parish’s Ministry Scheduling System. The St. Charles Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefits organization open to all Catholic men over the age of 18. The Knights meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. The Knights sponsor two ticket fundraisers per year. Knights are involved in and support the Cyrenian Peanut Butter and Jelly Ministry, Edna House, Special Education PSR, and the St. Charles Boy Scout organizations. The St. Charles Knights of Columbus also support three seminarians studying for the diocesan priesthood. The Knights of Columbus are also actively engaged in the sale of life insurance. The Ladies Guild of St. Charles Borromeo is a charitable organization focusing on the needs and charities of St. Charles Borromeo Parish. The guild meets monthly. The guild sponsors many events throughout the year including a Day of Recollection for women, an afternoon tea, salad luncheon, and various trips and pilgrimages. New members are always welcome. St. Charles Borromeo Parish has recently formed a L.E.A.F. Ministry. L.E.A.F. is an acronym for Listening, Encouraging, and Assisting Families of the Incarcerated. The L.E.A.F. Ministry is a Support community for Parents, Spouses, Family, and Friends of Those in Jails or Prisons. The L.E.A.F. Ministry meets in the Borromeo Room of the Parish Activity Center on May 18 and June 15 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each evening. If you have family members or friends who are incarcerated or know of someone in need of support because of an incarcerated family member or friend, please consider participating in the L.E.A.F. Lectors proclaim the Word of the Lord at St. Charles’ Weekend and Weekday Liturgies. Presently there are thirty-two (32) active Lectors in the Parish. Lectors are scheduled on a two-month cycle via the Parish’s Ministry Scheduling System. Weekday Lectors are scheduled on a monthly rotating schedule. Lectors will be trained by Parish staff under the guidance of Deacon Dan Galla. The St. Charles Borromeo Legion of Mary was established to give Glory to God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of everyone. Members participate in the life of the Parish through visitation to parishioners in hospitals and nursing homes and in meeting the spiritual needs of the Parish Community. For fifteen years, St. Charles Borromeo Parish has provided a monthly Hot Meal to those in need in the Newburgh area of Cleveland, Holy Name Parish on Broadway Avenue. The Meal was the vision of St. Charles Borromeo Parishioner Linda Michalakes. Linda was the leader of the Hot Meal Program from its inception. Linda passed away just before Easter this year. In her honor, the Hot Meal Program has been renamed Linda’s Meal and will now be led by Linda’s sister, Elaine Eichman. Linda’s Meal will be provided on the 2nd Thursday of the Month at Holy Name Parish on Broadway Avenue. Volunteers’ commitment will be six (6) times a year. Volunteers are needed for Shopping, Food Preparation, Serving the Meal, and Set-up and Cleanup. Merici Chapel is St. Charles Borromeo’s 24-hour, 7-day-a-week chapel for Eucharistic Adoration. Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen said, “My Holy Hour is the hour that makes my day.” Anyone interested in committing to one (1) hour a week of Eucharistic Adoration, contact Michael Coyle at [email protected] or drop a note to his attention in the Parish Office. St. Charles Borromeo is blessed with a wide variety of Music Ministries. Our Music Ministries add reverence and joy to our Parish Weekend, Weekday, Funeral, Wedding, and Special Liturgical Celebrations. Our Music Ministries include an Adult Choir, an Adult Bell Choir, a School Choir, and Instrumentalists. St. Charles Borromeo’s Post Cana Program, “Living the I Do’s” has a quarterly gathering from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on a Friday evening in the Lower Parish Hall. The Program is for Married Couples of All Ages. The quarterly program features a night out, an informative speaker, and enjoyable company. Free Baby Sitting is Available at the Post Cana Gatherings. The spiritual Prayer Shawl Ministry benefits our aged, ill, and homebound. These shawls will be made of fleece material (supplied). You will simply need to cut the fringe and tie the fringe as you pray for the ill or homebound person. The shawls are made at home. Easy to learn! St. Charles Borromeo Parish’s Pre-Cana program has been established for the preparation of engaged couples planning to marry. The Pre-Cana Program is a retreat geared towards both spiritual and intellectual communion for the couples. The Pre-Cana Team currently has ten (10) active members. Pre-Cana programs are offered on three (3) different Sundays in January, February and March. St. Charles Borromeo’s Pro-Life Ministry sponsors a Monthly Mass and Rosary for Life on the last Saturday of each Month at 8:00 a.m. The Pro-Life Ministry also participates in the 40 Days for Life Campaigns and other Diocesan Pro Life Events and Activities. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (R.C.I.A.)
The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) is a program for adults seeking to join the Catholic Church and the St. Charles Borromeo Parish family. Those adults who are consciously and freely seeking God and a conversion in the Holy Spirit are encouraged to explore the teachings of the Church and the experience of the St. Charles Borromeo Faith Community. The R.C.I.A. program begins each fall and culminates in the Liturgy of Holy Saturday. For those interested in more information or participating in the next R.C.I.A. program, please contact Fr. St. Charles Borromeo’s Rosary Cenacle of Prayer is a lay cenacle of the Marian Movement of Priests. The Cenacle prays the Rosary and other Prayers for the Church and the whole world. The Rosary Cenacle is consecrated to Mary to bring us closer to Jesus, Her Son, and to live His Holy Gospel. The Cenacle meets on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the Church prior to the 7:00 P.M. The St. Charles Borromeo Sports Boosters was established to give Parents of School Children and any interested Parishioners an opportunity to work together to sponsor the St. Charles Borromeo Parish Sports Programs. Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 8:00 p.m. in the Sports Boosters Office. Proceeds from Sports Boosters events are utilized to subsidize St. Charles Borromeo’s Sports Programs. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL ORGANIZATION
The St. Charles St. Vincent de Paul Organization is a service organization established to provide food and assistance to St. Charles Borromeo Parishioners and those from other Parishes and places in need. The St. Vincent de Paul meets the first Tuesday of every month in the Saint Vincent de Paul Room (Old Parish Credit Union) of the Parish Hall. The SVdP provides special food and assistance deliveries at Thanksgiving and Christmas. St. Vincent de Paul members also aid with other St. Charles Ministries including the Cyrenians, the Dismas Ministry, Our Lady of Peace Parish, Edna House, and the St. Augustine Community Cupboard. Requests for assistance received by the Parish Office are forwarded to the St. Vincent de Paul Board. The Board also provides information on other community resources when the SVdP Organization is unable to help. SUMMER CELEBRATION
(formerly the Carnival)
St. Charles sponsored a Summer Carnival for 87 years from 1932-2019. The Parish Carnival was not held in 2020, 2021, or 2022 due to the Pandemic. St. Charles will host a revamped Summer Celebration from July 14 through July 16, 2023. Details are presently being developed by our Summer Celebration Committee headed by Tim Ungvarsky and Brian Raymont. The Summer Celebration will need lots of help with set-up, clean-up and operations throughout the three day event. The Summer Carnival was successful for 87 years because of the volunteers, donors, and all the Parishioners and Friends who Supported the Event. The St. Charles Borromeo SWIFT (Spiritual Women in Faith Together) Ministry is dedicated to every woman’s individual journey of spiritual growth. Like Mary and St. Elizabeth, we gather in friendship to learn, love, and grow in deeper relationship with Christ. Our ministry strives to enrich personal growth, renew our spirits, and strengthen friendships with other women of all ages and states in life. Our studies vary from the Bible to spiritual DVDs to book/workbook resources. The group meets fifteen times a year and offers spiritual field trips and pilgrimages. St. Charles Borromeo’s Ushers are called to assist the Sacred Weekend and Holy Day Liturgies by Welcoming People to Church, Directing visitors to the Parish, Assisting with Church Seating, Taking up the weekly offering, and Directing the procession of the faithful to Holy Communion. All Adult Men and Women of the Parish may serve as Ushers.
